Why seven and jack are neighbours in Conquian

Bicycle Conquian removes eights, nines and tens, making seven and jack adjacent. This hypothetical, no-stakes paper exercise uses a numbered rank strip.

Which Conquian version is being read?

Cross out those three labels in each of four suit rows. Count the removed cards as four groups of three. The resulting inventory calculation is 52 − 12 = 40 cards.

After those ranks are removed, the retained rank strip is:

A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, J, Q, K

Number the surviving labels from one, with ace at the first position. Write position numbers below rank labels rather than replacing them: otherwise the eighth position could be mistaken for a retained eight. Keep a separate line for each suit.

Marking adjacent positions on paper

Write a line beneath the strip and mark each pair that touches:

Retained positionRankNext retained rank
667
77J
8JQ

Hypothetical illustration: take the same-suit cards hearts six, hearts seven and hearts jack. On the retained strip, they occupy positions 6, 7 and 8. Therefore, six-seven is one adjacent step, and seven-jack is the next adjacent step. The missing printed numerals do not create extra positions in this exercise.

Printed gap versus position gap

It helps to use two different descriptions. The printed gap from 7 to J contains the numerals 8, 9 and 10. The position gap in the Conquian strip is one step: 7 is at one retained position and J is immediately after it.

Audit the finished sheet in two directions. Read positions from left to right, then locate each rank by its position number. If a copied row still has thirteen positions, the deletions were not carried through. Correct the worksheet before interpreting its arrows. This diagram checks ordering only; it is not a recommendation about which cards to retain or play.
