Why a same-suit sequence is not a Canasta meld

This no-stakes sorting worksheet uses the Canasta rules described by Bicycle. The question is whether ranks match, not whether a row looks ordered. Work through the two rows without treating colour or order as a substitute for rank equality.

First record rank equality

In this Bicycle Canasta variant, a meld is built from cards of the same rank; a run or sequence is not the required structure. See the Bicycle Canasta rules for that specific rule scope.

Hypothetical row A: 8♣, 8♦, 8♥.

Write the ranks first: 8, 8, 8. They are equal, so this row has rank equality. Then record the suits: club, diamond, heart. The suits differ, but that does not undo the matching ranks. For this worksheet, the useful label is “same-rank group”.

Then test the tempting sequence

Hypothetical row B: 5♥, 6♥, 7♥.

Write the ranks: 5, 6, 7. They are different. Now record the suits: heart, heart, heart. The suits match, and the numbers rise by one, but neither observation changes the rank test. The useful label is “same-suit sequence”, not “Canasta meld”. This is why a visually tidy row can still fail the particular grouping rule being studied.

A quick worksheet method is to make two separate notes beside every row:

RowRanksSuitsSorting result
A8, 8, 8♣, ♦, ♥Same-rank group
B5, 6, 7♥, ♥, ♥Same-suit sequence

Use one deliberate mistake

Hypothetical counterexample: 8♣, 8♦, 9♥.

The first two cards match in rank, but the third is a nine. The row therefore does not have complete rank equality. Its suit pattern also does not rescue it: all three suits differ, while the ranks are not all identical. Mark it “one mistaken rank” and keep it separate from row A.

This exercise stops at classification. It does not assess every eligibility condition, the minimum size of a completed canasta, wild cards, or an initial-meld point guide.
